

Marshall Gurley Sr. founded Centurion Construction Company, Inc., in Raleigh, North Carolina, in October of 1980. Today, Marshall serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the Company. Greg Heffner, Company President since 1996, joined Centurion in 1981.
Centurion Construction Company Inc., a Class C Corporation, is a client-oriented General Contractor, providing construction services for all types of commercial projects. Our marketing efforts are primarily directed toward negotiated, design-build and select/invited bid projects. Various project types include office, retail, hospital/healthcare, warehouse, industrial, churches, high tech/labs, institutional and other specialized projects. In addition to new construction, the Company maintains a significant backlog of renovation and interior fit-up projects.
Maintaining a continuous presence in the public bid market enables Centurion to remain current in the bid environment while broadening our subcontractor and vendor resource base. Approximately 20% of the Company’s current work volume is the result successful bids and awards of public projects.
General Contracting – Centurion Construction Company Inc. has the resources to manage projects in a seamless fashion from project start-up to final completion. In addition to our subcontractor resources, Centurion maintains an in-house force of skilled craftsman to allow Centurion to self-perform work whenever it is appropriate to expedite a project.
Contract/Delivery options include lump-sum price, cost-plus fee basis, or cost-plus fee with a guaranteed maximum price.
Active participation in the bid market and our knowledge of industry conditions allows us to be competitive as a General Contractor. Centurion’s strong subcontractor/vendor relationships provide for high quality construction at a cost of competitive value.
Design-Build – As design-builders, we provide a single source delivery system for design and construction services. We select and manage the design team best suited for a project’s specific needs. Centurion provides maximum accountability for the total project to the owner. Our comprehensive services during the preconstruction and construction phases assure the project’s timely and in-budget completion.
The design-build approach offers the client the opportunity to enhance the project outcome (cost, time and quality) by using fast-tracking for schedule improvement, resulting in cost offsetting by rapid capital recovery while maintaining the quality standards from the inception through the completion of the warranty. With a design-build contract, value is achieved through enhanced performance and superior quality control.
Construction Management – Construction management approaches the project’s planning, design and construction phases as integrated tasks within a continuous process. These tasks are assigned to the construction team consisting of the owner, the construction manager and architect/engineer. Members of the construction team work together from the project’s inception to the project completion with the common objective of best serving the owner’s interests. Centurion Construction Company provides construction management services as an agent for the owner or on an at risk basis.
Bonding for Centurion Construction Company Inc. is provided through Thomas Rutherfoord, Inc. Centurion Construction recently received the “Most Favored Contractor Award” for its ongoing outstanding performance. Our excellent bonding rate allows Centurion to be very competitive on bids where a bond is required.

All Centurions’ project managers are equipped with the latest technological tools to enhance project communications and collaboration, including Timberline Estimating, Primavera Sure-Track Scheduling and Timberline Cost Controls. E-mail communications systems include sending and receiving CAD documents with in-house plotting capabilities.
Centurion’s project team members are established in accurate reporting of cost controls throughout the construction process. Our open-book policy gives our clients access to current construction cost information, allowing them to make financial decisions throughout the course of a project.

Project schedules are developed in-house during preconstruction through a combined effort of the Preconstruction Manager, Project Manager and Superintendent assigned to each project, working in collaboration with the design team, subcontractors and other appropriate team members. Our team approach to scheduling results in project schedules that our clients can have confidence in.
All project schedules are maintained and updated by our project management teams, allowing our clients immediate access to critical schedule information.
During the initial project design phase and prior to the commencement of the construction documentation, the Centurion team will participate in the development of the project criteria and provide input through its resources to optimize the value of the project through early planning and coordination along with constructability reviews.
Estimating - In addition to producing bid estimates, for projects obtained on a negotiated basis, we provide budget estimates at various stages of design (conceptual, schematic, design-development and construction documents) to monitor the projects design and scope of work with regard to the established project budget.
Value Engineering – Our value engineering initiatives focus on maintaining functionality and aesthetics of a facility’s design, without sacrificing its’ integrity.
Design Consulting – Our preconstruction professionals encourage and develop sound working relationships with the design teams for our various projects. We offer consulting with design team members early in the design process on construction methods and material alternatives, enhancing the value to our clients.
Subcontractor & Vendor Selections – Typically, our preconstruction team members coordinate with the Project Manager and Superintendent in the buy-out phase of the project to coordinate and maintain continuity through the subcontractors and vendors who participated during the preconstruction pricing efforts. The result is a strong network of subcontractors and suppliers that Centurion Construction Company has excellent historical experience with. This has allowed us to consistently provide competitive pricing.
We firmly believe the key to a successful loss prevention program is awareness and on-going reinforcement of our corporate safety policy. Accidents are preventable and we are committed to providing a safe work environment for workers on our projects. A safe project is ultimately a productive and efficient project.
Our field personnel participate in OSHA Awareness training as well as First Aid and CPR training. Field personnel also receive additional detailed hazard awareness training in accordance with specific project requirements. All project managers, superintendents and executives participate in OSHA Awareness training, including insurance and risk management training. Other training includes crisis management training.
The Centurion Safety Director works with our project managers and superintendents to develop a project-specific safety plans. All jobsites are monitored carefully for effective implementation of safety procedures. Our safety management program has resulted in an exemplary safety record for our Company.
Centurion Construction Company, Inc. is dedicated to sustainable design and construction. Members of our staff have participated in several projects following LEED guidelines and Centurion is dedicated to sustainable design and construction. Our staff provides clients with an expanded resource in the “Green” building movement.
The Centurion staff is experienced in the area of environmental awareness and frequently develop project-specific environmental management plans to enhance the project’s environmental impact.
